About this Blog

Hi,
As part of my B.Ed 4 Home Economics research dissertation I am conducting research on Inflammatory Bowel Disease and in particular focusing on the two main diseases Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's Disease.

As part of this research I am looking to identify:
  • the growing prevalence of IBD within society
  • some of the causes of IBD
  • symptoms of IBD
  • treatments currently available and future therapies as well as
  • identify how society can raise awareness of IBD.

If you or anyone you know suffers from the disease please feel free to leave a comment for example:
  • -What foods you find aggravate the condition?
  • -What symptoms did you first present with?
  • -What treatments are you currently receiving (are these treatments working)?
  • -How would you promote education of the disease to raise awareness?
  • -In general comment on how you lead your life living with this condition.

  1. Hi I am a recently diagnosed patient of Crohn's Disease and I suppose im still coming to terms with the foods that dont effect my disease. I eat mostly fish or chicken with rice or veg. I dont eat snack foods or drink milk. I cant eat a lot of spice (especially peppers) and definitely not garlic or citrus foods. Iv started to keep a food diary to see what foods are always effecting the disease. I live a relatively normal life but there are times when I get depressed because I just cant eat what I want.

  3. A food diary is an excellent way to discover what foods affect IBD. Patterns can emerge and people can alter their diet to help them lead a normal life.

  4. I was diagnosed in 2007, age 27. I am not from Ireland orginally. I got this disease due to my very stressful job. None of the medicine is working for me. I have tried everything, if they do work for you you are lucky. I had had much worse diarrhea and more pain. I feel better now with no medicine at all. Remember taking drugs is a closed circle, all of them will lower your immune system eventually, be careful especially with steroids as often this is one way, you become addicted and then only operation is a solution..baking soda helped me!

  5. Although therapy has become more tolerable and once daily FDC tables have made it easier to adhere to prescribed treatment, it still requires that patients take their medication regularly to achieve sustained viral suppression.
